The fold as a design choice |
| In the previous article, we talked about how TrackDesign carefully chooses the projects of different architects and designers by the way they convey through the object the compositional themes that best represent the company. |

An important reflection on the composition of products is the fascinating theme of the corten metal surface, that is, its ability to be folded several times to take on a continuous and light spatial shape. And this is not only true for corten, but also for steel, copper and brass: these are the precious metals that are processed in the TrackDesign atelier in their sixteen finishes. An authoritative and influential source for the theme of the "fold" is certainly the thought of the designer, artist and writer Bruno Munari, in whose work he reserved the concept of the fold a significant role. The folding theory has become in Munari an extension of the art and technique of origami to the world of product design. He demonstrated how to use the fold by pushing beyond the boundaries that can be set, in an economy of gestures and material that brings surprising results to life. It is with this principle that, for example, a simple metal bar for Munari can become the Panarea candle holder. An example of how Munari's ideas have influenced our products is the TrackDesign 134 collection designed by Arch. Vincenzo Minenna. This composition of table and chairs represents the maximum exaltation of the fold as a means of sensitising particularly tenacious matter such as steel, corten, copper and brass. In this way it is the fold itself that becomes the main actor of the composition.
Another source of inspiration is that of Origami: it is an artistic form of Japanese origins with profound symbolic meanings that has its roots in the most particular traits of the Nipponese culture. The term derives from the Japanese, ori meaning fold and kami meaning paper, and outlines the way this art is processed with the only means of a sheet of paper which, when folded several times on itself, takes shapes that recall the nature, animals or common objects. In the same way, some of the TrackDesign products were born such as the corten chair Foglia. Available in different finishes on a corten and steel base, it is obtained by folding the metal "sheet" several times in order to obtain a seat that meets ergonomic and aesthetic needs.
