School Group Claudie Haigneré
The Claudie Haigneré School Group in Châtellerault, France, chose COR-TEN steel to define the school’s outdoor spaces, creating an educational environment where contemporary design and functionality meet in service of the school community. The furnishings include benches, litter bins, bollards, barriers and a bike rack, all in COR-TEN steel; benches, bins, barriers and bike rack share the same laser-cut leaf pattern.
A living teaching material
The use of COR-TEN steel in the school’s urban furniture is a design choice of great significance: the characteristic rusty patina that forms naturally over time becomes a living teaching tool, letting students observe controlled oxidation processes first-hand.
Integrated into the school landscape
The warm brown-orange tone of COR-TEN creates a harmonious contrast with the greenery surrounding the school, defining functional spaces for socialising, breaks and outdoor activities. The material’s robustness makes it ideal for a high-traffic school setting. Benches and litter bins support the rest areas, while bollards, barriers and the bike rack complete and define the outdoor spaces.
A symbolic value
For the school, named after the celebrated French astronaut and politician Claudie Haigneré, the choice of COR-TEN takes on an added symbolic meaning: a technologically advanced material, also used in the aerospace sector, that embodies the spirit of innovation and excellence the school wants to pass on to its students.
